We are the Mosquito Virology Team.
We are a dedicated group of researchers investigating mosquito-borne viruses. Our lab is based at the Rega Institute for Medical Research in Leuven, Belgium. We are affiliated with the Department of Microbiology, Immunology and Transplantation of the University of Leuven.
We study viruses that are transmitted by mosquitoes. Such viruses are called arboviruses. Several arboviruses are a major burden for global health. Our primary focus is the development of new concepts to fight mosquito-borne diseases. To make this happen, we use an interdisciplinary approach involving molecular virology, drug discovery and medical entomology. For more information, check out our research and publication pages.
In our mosquito infection laboratory in the BSL3 facility, we investigate the transmission of arboviruses by different mosquito species from Belgium and abroad.
We study how arboviruses interact with their human and animal hosts to better understand the drivers of arbovirus disease.
Using our expertise in antiviral drug discovery, we aim to develop new strategies to fight arbovirus infections.
The Rega Institute for Medical Research is an interdisciplinary research institute of the University of Leuven, that hosts a part of the Department of Microbiology and Immunology and the Medicinal Chemistry division of the Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences.
The institute is home to more than 300 scientists from different continents and backgrounds. It is located on the Gasthuisberg campus of the University Hospital of Leuven. Please consult the website if you want to learn more about the rich history of the Rega Institute and about the other research groups hosted by the institute
